Science meets pop culture on StarTalk! Astrophysicist & Hayden Planetarium director Neil deGrasse Tyson, his comic co-hosts, guest celebrities & scientists discuss astronomy, physics, and everything else about life in the universe. Keep Looking Up!
Why Neil deGrasse Tyson and Emily Rice Think You Should Pay Attention to Low-Mass Stars
Could we find life around low-mass stars? Neil deGrasse Tyson and comedian Chuck Nice find out why life might be more likely around low-mass stars, what makes brown dwarfs, galactic archeology, and more with astronomer Emily Rice.
Where did the name “brown dwarf” come from? Learn about when brown dwarfs were first discovered and astronomer Jill Tarter’s research on them. We discuss star classification, why the letters are so out of order, and how brown dwarfs are relevant to the field of exoplanets. What is the difference between a brown dwarf and a low-mass star? Find out what the cutoff is for thermonuclear fusion and how deuterium can help low-mass stars fuse a little.
What is the difference between a brown dwarf and a hot Jupiter? Do we know how brown dwarfs are formed? What is the largest dwarf star ever discovered? Learn about age-mass degeneracy and how low-mass brown dwarfs could actually be old high-mass brown dwarfs. Discover the Sun’s tachocline and how the brown dwarve’s magnetic field may operate differently.
What happens when two brown dwarfs collide? What the heck is a blue straggler? Find out about the lifespan of brown dwarfs, galactic archeology, and metallicity. How do you tell the age of different low-mass stars? What would it take to capture a direct image of an exoplanet? We discuss the Trappist-1 System, the Goldilocks zone, and good candidates for Earth-like planets. Plus, a cosmic perspective on the importance of space exploration.
Thanks to our Patrons Anthony Garcia, Matthew Carlson, mike kelly, Brett DiFrischia, Mary Clare V., Peter Ilvento, A dinosaur in dental school, Cedric Rashade Collins, 1874 Homestead, and Bob for supporting us this week.

Its the same here ( Germany), 25°C is about perfect. 30°C+ is hot, 35°C+ too hot. -10°C is about the point where it gets fing cold. 0°C+- is typical winter. So its the same feeling. When we hear 100°F we think about saunas or cooking water while its just "too hot" in reality.
earth is the bakery section of market.. lol
The habitual lying is getting beyond a joke now where it doesn't even make sense.
Great primary school children's book fairytale storytellers ..
can we do a montage of what Chucks backgrounds have been from prior shows?
Idc what anyone says, Pluto we love you no matter what these people who will never get to leave Earth say.
AVP 👽 Like him thinking / that his skills , might save him / no not really ,/ I did have to ...let go of people/ / / but yeah / came to talk to you / .... guess not// // so yeah ,.../ That won't help / especially if he is a professional anything /
I wish the co-host interrupted less. I think Neil is much more interesting on his own
Celsius is easy. Below 10° grab a jacket. Below 20° get a coat. Over 25° get a t shirt. Over 30° it's hot. Over 35° forget working. Over 38° stop everything but emergency work.
Camera obscura. I've worked as a photographer/projectionist and you're absolutely right Neil. Pinhole aperture makes things close up in focus and will only have focus to infinity when a long exposure is applied which would have bleached the photographs white from the extremity of sunlight without an atmosphere. These people will never give it up. They want conspiracy with everything and what enables them is about half the theories are in fact conspiracy so they say everything is a conspiracy.
Nobody cares what you think
You made my evening, thanks. How to go to sleep now?
I am guessing cicadas are delicious and high in protein. I think you just fry them up with a little salt and pepper.
The object(s) needs a power source that does not come from the grid in order to charge, operate, and send power to the "grid" under any circumstance and sustain itself. 😊
Ever want to hear the least scientific b.s. explanation of how you know something is fake ?...... Take it away NEIL.
Newfoundlanders are definitely different, in the best possible ways.😊
Neil dumb.
Hello.
The nephilim giants knew secrets of the spiritual science and built a so called shrine that’s why there isn’t any way of knowing how old they are.. they also built the pyramids..they have no idea which ones are the oldest remember these are are scientific hypothesis..the nephilim built both for worship..
Of course they haven't visited. The time and/or energy required for interstellar travel makes it plain ridiculous that any race so advanced wouldn't make themselves known to humanity.
Show me an example where we use a term with its adjective but as general not calling it that term. A dwarf planet is a planet . "Planet" is the main term and underneath we have different types of planets. Same like stars ... So why is it that we do not accept Pluto as a planet orbiting the sun in our solar system. Planet is a planet regardless of its type. A human is human regardless of its race religion color or type.
Imagine the year 2 billion AD.
Society is written and ruled by those who benefit from the 'free will' theory. Therefore, we believe it. This funnily enough, disproves the notion of it -- as your brain is programmed from birth that you have this 'free will' which warps your mental state.
A fishtank in space, cosmic aquarius. ✌️
IT IS TOO LATE
I also have to say I cannot stand the way Neil deGrasse Tyson pronounces cicada lol
Love triangles are also chaos.
Dr Neil deGrasse Tyson is my super hero!
You also get that with Celsius.
The shaking of the hands in the Oval Office was from the conversation Einstein had with Openhim. "It's not for you when they give you the award. It's for them"
It feels better for weather because 100 is us. (Actually Daniel Farenheit meant 100 to be human body temperature. He must have had a fever that day.) So it makes a percentage scale of how the temperature compares to us.
i wish youtube knew what alphabetacal order is so i can find startalk faster
Simple and amazing as always.
You can't predict the future but who knew that you also can't predict the past.
The mere thought of a human telling me how the universe will end lmao 😂😅....
It's all just a matter of what you're used to.
I once seen a cluster of about 20 to 25 silver-ish(what looked liked *orbs*) way up in the day skies ...i was so baffled and intrigued ...i 💯% forgot to take out my phone ...i was so tunnel focus that taking my phone out never crossed my mind..
I searched what 10^100 looks like written out, and my head hurts from trying to comprehend it.

“The smartest human.. they’ll roll forward” *proceeds to talk about Steven Hawking*😅
Yes, you get it using Celsius too.

wrong football
I still do not get it. I need more brain cells.
Going by stat trek since they both like to reference it. Star trer classifies planets like this, earth would be an "M class planet". Planets are classifird in classes but they are all still planets
This is World Class pop-science. Which we need desperately. Thank you both of you!
Dark energy will cause the universe to form a torus and eventually fall back into itself.
Yeah i like fahrenheit for weather and Celsius for the temperature of liquids or objects.
The person I would most like to bring back to life is Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, popularly known by his unofficial title of The Mahatma, which means Great Soul. Unfortunately he was cremated then his ashes were cast into the holy river Ganges, so resuscitation in his case is unlikely to be successful.
